The old saying goes "you never get something for nothing", so it is with web hosting. Before we even start, let us be clear, there is no such monster as unlimited. It doesn't exist. The word is a legendary dragon that you're going to never see but always hear about.

Storage space on a server is finite. It exists on a platter or flash memory. And it does have a limit and a set cost. Bandwidth is also limited. Each information pipe has a set speed and a defined amount of data that may go through that pipe. So how can any hosting company offer unlimited of disk space and bandwidth. Answer is: they cannot.

Routinely, a host has wording buried in their provisions of serviced to address this. They may constrain the amount of CPU or share of server load or functions that a shopper can take up. And these limits will come into affect well prior to getting close to the mystical point of infinity. Therefore with so many hosting providers offering unlimited disk space and bandwidth, you should train yourself on where and when these conditions of service limits will actually be reached? In the case of disk space, the larger the disk and the more people on the disk, the slower the accesses for information. And if a host is a very good one and keeps backups, each meg in play is really doubled.

On a shared hosting environment you need to take standard disk drive space and divide it by the amount of buyers. The most common disk drive a host uses is a 1 terabyte platter. We are going to leave flash drives out of this talk as they are too costly at the time of this writing (but they're coming down in price gradually). If a host earns $4 each from each user, you may expect their break even point to be around 20 users. So every user should get about a 500 meg share. Of course, the typical user will use much less. So accounting for the "tiny users" 1 gig is a fair assessment for a shared hosting account. If you're getting that, you're being treated fairly. If you're getting 5-10 gigs of space on a shared hosting account, you have got to wonder how the host is earning money off of you and this could be a concern.

The health of your web site links to the healthiness of the server you are on. Do yourself and your hosting provider a solid if you are anywhere near 5 gigs and ask them for semi dedicated or dedicated solution so your hosting provider can make money and you can stay safe too.

On the bandwidth end, it is tougher to judge. Large data pipes are readily available and you would surpass the CPU of any shared server well before getting close to eclipsing an information pipe. Therefore you will usually get near to the appearance of unlimited bandwidth with pretty much any host so long as you are running a normal size site.

So is unlimited web hosting worth it? If you are accepting the word "unlimited" is not totally correct and you are running a little to medium site, then yes. But don't expect to run streaming video, high cpu loads or anything that effects other users, otherwise unlimited will swiftly turn into zero. Be honest with yourself and your requirements and you'll keep your host and you contented in the long term.

Unlimited web hosting is still a good choice for most private sites and medium traffic business web sites as it is extremely affordable.
