It is an unfortunate fact that eczema, an irritating and ugly skin condition, is something that medicine just cannot cure. This is mainly because it is still something of a mystery as to why and how eczema occurs. Despite this less than encouraging state of affairs, there are steps that a person with eczema can take in order to minimise their suffering. Albeit not a cure, taking action to address the symptoms can at least improve your quality of life, and help to improve the state of your skin.

Good hygiene is a must for any skin condition, and eczema is no exception. The problem is that some people take their attempts to keep the skin clean too far, and actually end up making their problem worse. For a start, harsh chemical detergents will only irritate the skin further. Your skin will react much better to soaps or bath oils that are made up of natural ingredients such as Aloe Vera and other herbal extracts.

Soaking in the bathtub or staying too long in the shower will not help you to improve the quality of your skin either, even if you do not have eczema. Being submerged in water for too long actually strips the skin of its natural oils, and it needs these to stay moist and supple. With a skin condition like eczema, you need to hold onto the natural oils in the skin in order to help soothe the skin and heal any breaks caused by scratching.

This leads us to another tip: stop scratching at your skin. It may seem difficult to resist the temptation to scratch at the rashes of eczema on your skin, because they can develop a strong itching sensation. Scratching at your skin will not only make your skin even more red and irritated, but you can easily break the skin and cause it to bleed. Skin that is broken like this is open to infection, leading to a greater danger of turning a case of eczema into something much worse.

Some good over the counter moisturising creams and lotions are good at soothing the skin, and will help toward easing the strong itching sensation you can get. However, the same advice as to your choice of soap applies. Look for a moisturising product that contains natural ingredients, instead of one made up of chemicals that can actually make your skin worse.

Your overall lifestyle can affect the state of your skin too, and so you should look at other ways you could help your skin to heal. Be careful with what you eat, because poor nutrition is thought to be one major contributor to diseases like eczema. Make sure you get enough fresh produce to give your body the nutrition it needs, otherwise you may never have the healthy skin you hope for again.

Whilst dealing with eczema is much more complicated than taking an instant cure pill, once you make the effort to make some positive changes you will usually find that only good things will come of them. Some peoples skin is just more sensitive than others, and so requires a little more care and attention to remain healthy.
