Passwords for the BIOS are generally used when there is a need for extra security to the computers. However, as a user, you can either create a password or prevent other users from accessing the BIOS or at the most, even prevent the PC from booting. At times, it becomes a pain when the password is forgotten and in such cases, it is important to reset bios password for your PC.
The ideal method for resetting the BIOS password entirely depends on the type of the BIOS owned by the system. There are many common BIOS such as the AMI, IBM, Phoenix and more. Some of these BIOS ensure that the user inputs a password even before the start of the system or more. In a few instances, passwords are required merely to access the BIOS set up. There are many ways in which a user can reset bios password in the system.
The common method is using a password at the backdoor, which is a feature that is common amongst a few BIOS manufacturers. This implies that this password is common and is set to work despite any password that has been set by the user. They are used in situations for testing and maintenance by the manufacturing company. However, these passwords are not standard for all the BIOS that have been manufactured by the organization and tend to vary over a period of time.
The second most common method is to reset the password by using software. Apparently, users need to store their password that can be accessed after booting the system. This implies that the user should also know the address or the memory location in which the BIOS password is stored. Few users tend to write their own programs to decode the password from the memory of a PC by means of storing it in a port and then decoding the contents of the port.
Resetting by means of hardware is yet another method, which is mostly used in instances where the user cannot access the machine after it has been started up. The password is stored in a small battery and in such instances where the PC is off this battery is removed from its location, which is at the top of the motherboard. When this happens, all the CMOS information pertaining to the BIOS password is erased and the user can once again input the correct CMOS information to the machine on booting up. After all, it is important to remember that these passwords are easy to reset and no hassle is required.
