We never know what the future may hold and so we can only do what is best for us at the time and then re look at things in the future when circumstances may have changed. You can always edge on the side of caution however if changes need to be made then you can alter or change your insurance in the future. There are a number of reasons as to why your circumstances may change, and these may include starting a family, getting married, moving house or taking out a bigger mortgage to make some improvements within your home.

Critical illness insurance will always cover you for one of the listed illnesses however the sum assured and for how long it covers you for is dependent on your choice when taking out the policy. This is then where it may become difficult to decide exactly what level of cover is best; you may know exactly what cover is best for you now however you may also want to consider the future. As this is never mapped out it is best to take out the plan to suit current circumstances and then make any necessary changes, whether that be altering an existing plan if possible or taking out a new application. If taking out the insurance when you are of a young age, however over the age of 18 as this is typically the minimum age you are able to take out critical illness insurance, you are less likely to know the cover you need in the future. However when taking out the insurance you would typically find that the price of the insurance would typically be cheaper than an individual taking out the insurance who was aged thirty or forty years old perhaps. Therefore taking the insurance out when younger, you would typically look at getting the insurance at a lower price, so if changes were needed to be made in the future you may look at having to pay slightly more for the insurance but if you were looking to increase the term or sum assured this would increase the cost of the insurance also.

Critical illness insurance may suit someone’s requirement if for example they have any outstanding liabilities that need covering or if they want to ensure that there partner or children perhaps were financially secure if something happened to them. People may discuss as to whether or not they need the insurance however this is only up to the life assured to decide as it would be them who was paying for the insurance on a monthly basis. If in the future your requirements did change and you were to for example pay off your mortgage which was why you took out the insurance then you may decide you no longer need the cover however you can choose to keep the cover or look at stopping the insurance as you are not tied into any contract.

The cover is taken out to cover you if suffered a critical illness and we all hope that we would never have to make a claim however you should make sure that it keeps up with our needs and every so often we should look through and see if we do need to change the sum assured whether that is to increase it or decrease. You may for example not be able to afford the same level of critical illness insurance as the economy has dipped over the past few years it has meant some people are struggling and so may look at reducing the monthly cost or in some circumstances cancel the plan until they are more financially secure.

The adviser who you deal with can always help with any questions you may have and so if changes did need to be made or you needed further advice in the future then you should consult him or her.
