It seems like every other ad on TV or in the press is about the latest cell phone technology. Whether it is Bluetooth, internet access or hands free calls, it just seems like things are constantly changing. But how much of this stuff is important and when do you really need to upgrade?

If you remember handsets from a few years ago, it felt like you were carrying a brick in your pocket. Sound quality was poor and if you decided to spend a few minutes playing with the games, you would usually give up after a couple of frustrating attempts to make the black and white pixels do whatever they were supposed to. Compared to that, more recent slim line offering are without doubt a huge step forward.

Modern cell phones are far smaller, but also much more powerful. Whether you are looking at a new blackberry or Iphone, or just a solid middle of the range Samsung, you are pretty much guaranteed some great features, from one touch calls to online apps. So why would you change?

Actually, there a couple of good reasons. Like them or loathe them, mobile phones are a part of modern life. As such it is useful to keep up with modern technology. This is especially true now that most operators propose free upgrades to your phone in order to keep or attract your custom. And the second reason is simply fashion. Cell phones are no longer sold just as a practical device. The look (especially for the younger generation) is at least as important. Like buying new clothes, it isn't all about necessity, but also about desire.

This all begs the question of what to do with your old phone. Of course, you could just leave it in a drawer somewhere, but there are better options. There are over 200 million subscribers in the USA alone, which is a lot of old phones. There are two sensible choices here. The first is to give your old phone to one the many charities that collect and redistribute used cell phones to those in need. This is good option in tough economic times. The second, especially if the phone itself is broken, is to recycle. Cell phone batteries are a source of pollution and it makes sense for the planet to dispose of them properly.

Upgrading your phone is a choice, but one that doesn't just have to be about necessity. If yours is difficult to use or outdated, a new model makes sense. But sometimes getting a new cell phone is just about fun or fashion. Your new phone might not work any better, but it will certainly be the best looking one on the block!
