It is a good thing boxes can be found in a lot of different places because something always happens to some of them whether you have new or used boxes.

Another way to find boxes that very few people think of is to check with a local Realtor for people that have just moved in. A Realtor may not want to give out the address so a good way is to ask them to give your phone number to the people that recently moved and if they are interested in recycling their boxes they can give you a call.

Craigslist posts are another great way to get the word out you are needing some boxes. You can always use more traditional methods like newspaper posts and telling all of your friends. Many times people you know may either have some, or could know someone that has some moving boxes you can use.

Driving through residential neighbourhoods on the day that the trash is collected is a great way to find a lot of boxes for moving day. Most neighbourhoods have recycle trucks that come by the same day as the trash is picked up and lots of people are recycling cardboard. The boxes may have been flattened but you can usually just unfold them and tape them up with packing tape. When you find some in front of a house it is a good idea to knock on the door and ask permission before you collect the boxes. Many people are glad to share their used boxes.

There are businesses that have boxes which are usually stronger and work well for the heavier things you need to pack like books and dishes. The only problem is you need to contact the businesses ahead of time because most businesses crush their boxes to save space in their trash containers. Grocery stores, liquor stores and department stores are good places to start.

Gathering up used boxes does present some problems though, like they could have weak spots because they have already been used. Another issue is, often times used boxes from businesses can have smells that linger from the original contents which can get on the things you put in the box. Plus make sure there is nothing that has been spilled inside the box that can stain contents you place inside.

Another thing that is important if you are going to use the boxes for shipping or to mail something, is the fact that most shipping companies require you to use new boxes that has no writing on the outside of the box.

Taking these things into consideration, getting new boxes may be the way to go. New boxes can often be found at places that rent moving trucks and storage warehouses. There are stores also that carry boxes like home improvement stores or that sell office supplies. You can also get the packing materials you need at the time you purchase new boxes, because normally used boxes will not have any packing materials which are necessary if you don't want anything damaged or broken during the move.

One of the hardest parts about moving is, when you pack it does not matter how far you are moving the items have to be packed carefully so nothing breaks. The new packing materials make it easier to pack because of bubble wrap and air filled materials. There are also eco friendly packing peanuts that dissolve when they come in contact with water.

An old trick that helps save space and cuts cost is to use your clothes, towels, sheets and small pillows for packing breakable and delicate items.
