The National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) was established in Chicago, IL in the United States in 1987. Their main objective is to provide certification and advanced credentials for professionals in the health and fitness industry and they are widely regarded as global leaders in this respect. They also provide continuing education resources for health and fitness professionals who wish to retain the certifications. The subjects that are addressed in their various programs include your home or kinesiology (also known as human movement science), anatomy and physiology as well as physical assessment and program design. They provide expert advice and guidance to many leading teams in sport including NBA and NFL teams as well as do many individual athletes.

The National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA) has provided accreditation to the certification programs carried out by NASM which means that these certifications are accepted both in the USA as well as globally. The health and fitness certification programs which are based on examinations are as follows:
-"Certified Personal Trainer (CPT) Certification". These programs are aimed at providing personal trainers with education and learning on such topics as exercise and movement science, nutrition and the modification of behavior.
-"Performance Enhancement Specialist (PES) Advanced Specialization". This programme aims at training professionals who can design and deliver individually customized training programs to optimize the performance of athletes.
-"Corrective Exercise Specialist (CES) Advanced Specialization". This program trains professionals to deal with impairments or imbalances in the musculoskeletal system and to address pain and fatigue concerns for people with post-rehabilitation problems.

In addition, the NASM provides continuing education and advanced specializations skills to health and fitness industry professionals who can choose from a menu of over 20 courses in order to stay abreast of the latest trends and scientific knowledge in the health and fitness industry. The courses offered by NASM are an integral part of the accredited bachelors, masters and doctoral programs offered by two on-line universities. These universities are the California Institute of Pennsylvania and the Arizona School of Health Sciences.

The NASM certified personal trainer is capable of designing specific workout programs for their clients that can yield optimal results. These trainers can carry out accurate health assessment of their clients irrespective of whether they are health club members of high performance athletes. They are trained to design, develop and if required, modify exercise programs in a safe and valuable manner in order to benefit their clients.
