It is difficult to picture anyone failing to love an excursion to Copenhagen, since it is packed with ancient, cultural and natural attractions, as well as boasting one of the most laidback & friendly atmospheres you'll discover in a major capital.

There are many remarkable sights to take in in the city, but when you just have a single day to spend there, try filling it by picking a tour around the many ancient buildings, before spending 1 or 2 hours in Tivoli Gardens.

Copenhagen can track down its roots back more than 850 years and as you would imagine, there's plenty of evidence of that dotted across the city. You can also get various architecturally amazing contemporary structures, but it is the older buildings you'll remember.

Start your visit in City Hall Square, where you'll discover a number of public art, the entrance to Tivoli Gardens along with the Italian-inspired official building from which the plaza takes its name.

Leave the square and go on a wander across the car-free Strøget to take in the capital's most fashionable stores and get some souvenirs, such as the well-known local ceramics. There are many al fresco cafes within this pedestrian area, so it is a great place to enjoy a coffee and also a pastry.

You can then start to tour the capital's imperial palaces - something that's likely to be one of the highlights of your Baltic cruise holiday.

The Christiansborg Palace, which is home to both the Royal Reception Rooms and the Danish parliament, is an effective opening point. Then take a leisurely walk through the lively canalside quarter of Nyhavn, before arriving at the spectacular Amalienborg. The development of four palaces placed around an octagonal courtyard is used by Queen Margrethe II as her winter residence.

You should definitely also take an hour or 2 to go to the royal family's former summer abode, Rosenborg Castle. The extraordinary building, that is surrounded by beautiful formal gardens, houses the Danish Crown Jewels and a collection of artefacts related to the monarchy.

Finish your excursion of the city by travelling towards the harbour to view The Little Mermaid statue, which is based on the story by the world-famous author Hans Christian Andersen. After that spend your closing couple of hours in the city relaxing in Tivoli Gardens, indulging in the tranquility or even a jaunt on the park's timber rollercoaster.
