It is difficult to imagine anyone failing to love a break to Copenhagen, because it is packed with ancient, cultural and natural attractions, as well as boasting one of the more laidback and friendly atmospheres you will discover in a major capital.

There are a lot notable sights to enjoy around the city, but if you just have one day to spend there, try filling it by picking a tour around the many ancient buildings, before spending a couple of hours in Tivoli Gardens.

Copenhagen can track down its roots back more than 850 years and as you would expect, you can find lots of proof of that dotted round the city. Additionally , there are various architecturally magnificent modern structures, but it is the older structures you will recall.

Commence your excursion in City Hall Square, where you will find a selection of public artworks, the entrance to Tivoli Gardens and the Italian-inspired official building from which the piazza takes its name.

Depart the plaza and go on a meander down the car-free Strøget to take in the capital's most fashionable stores and grab some souvenirs, such as the famous local ceramics. There are numerous al fresco cafes in this pedestrian area, so it is a good spot to enjoy a coffee and also a pastry.

You can then start to tour the city's stately palaces - something that is likely to be one of the highlights of your Baltic cruise holiday.

The Christiansborg Palace, that is home to both the Royal Reception Rooms and the Danish parliament, is an effective opening point. Then take a saunter around the bustling canalside district of Nyhavn, before arriving at the amazing Amalienborg. The complex of four palaces located around an octagonal courtyard is used by Queen Margrethe II as her winter residence.

Ensure you also take an hour or two to visit the royal family's former summer home, Rosenborg Castle. The extraordinary structure, that is enveloped by stunning formal gardens, houses the Danish Crown Jewels as well as a collection of artefacts related to the monarchy.

Conclude your tour around the city by heading towards the harbour to view The Little Mermaid statuette, that is based on the story by the world-famous author Hans Christian Andersen. Then spend your final couple of hours in the city relaxing in Tivoli Gardens, indulging in its tranquility or perhaps a ride on the park's timber rollercoaster.
