Here is a look at four football players that have excelled as ball carriers on the field and are considered some of the best running backs of all time.

Jim Brown

Many people considered Jim Brown to be one the most efficient and fierce ball carriers in the game. He retired at a young age but the years that he played he was very effective and was feared by the other teams.
Brown played in a time when the seasons were much shorter as some of them were only twelve games long. It may not be fair to compare statistics for Jim Brown with modern players. The shorter seasons make a big difference in things like thousand yard seasons and such. However, few people will disagree that Jim Brown is one of the most dominant players to ever play the game.

Emmitt Smith

Emmitt Smith is considered to be the top player at his position but this is based mostly on statistics. However, there are other things to think about besides statistics. Numbers may not tell the entire story. Emmitt Smith had a very good Dallas team surrounding him and had very good blocking from his front line, as well as a good fullback and excellent tight ends. It is only imagined what other players in his position could have accomplished.

Barry Sanders

Many people believe Barry Sanders was the greatest pure runner to ever play the game of football. When Sanders played college ball at Oklahoma State he was almost unstoppable. Even though he had subpar blocking and support he still managed to amaze fans for many years.

Walter Payton

For many years Walter Payton went unrecognized by most fans except for the ones in Chicago. He was nicknamed "Sweetness" but he was as tough and as fierce as anyone in the profession. Payton also was very durable and played for many years with a mediocre team. When the Bears of the mid eighties began to shine everyone in the world saw what Walter Payton could do.
