It is tough to picture anyone failing to enjoy an excursion to Copenhagen, since it is packed with ancient, cultural and natural points of interest, in addition to boasting one of the most laidback & friendly atmospheres you will find in a major capital.

There are a lot impressive sights to enjoy around the city, but when you just have a single day to spend there, try filling it by taking a tour of the many historic buildings, before spending 1 or 2 hours in Tivoli Gardens.

Copenhagen is able to trace its roots back more than 850 years and as you would imagine, there's lots of evidence of that dotted across the city. There are also several architecturally amazing modern structures, but it will be the older buildings you'll recall.

Commence your excursion in City Hall Square, where you'll discover a collection of public artworks, the entrance to Tivoli Gardens along with the Italian-inspired official building from which the plaza takes its name.

Depart the piazza and take a saunter up the car-free Strøget to take in the capital city's most fashionable shops and get some souvenirs, such as the famous local pottery. There are plenty of al fresco cafes within this pedestrian area, so it's a good spot to enjoy a coffee and a pastry.

You can then start to tour the city's stately palaces - something that is more likely to be one of the high points from your Baltic cruise holiday.

The Christiansborg Palace, which is home to both the Royal Reception Rooms and the Danish parliament, is an effective starting point. Then go on a leisurely walk through the lively canalside borough of Nyhavn, before arriving at the amazing Amalienborg. The development of four palaces located around an octagonal courtyard is used by Queen Margrethe II as her winter home.

Ensure you also take an hour or 2 to go to the royal family's former summer home, Rosenborg Castle. The notable structure, that is enveloped by stunning formal gardens, houses the Danish Crown Jewels and a collection of artefacts linked to the monarchy.

Finish your tour of the city by heading towards the harbour to see The Little Mermaid statuette, that is based on the story by the world-famous author Hans Christian Andersen. After that spend your concluding couple of hours in the city relaxing in Tivoli Gardens, enjoying its tranquility or perhaps a ride on the park's timber rollercoaster.
