It doesn't have to be that difficult to live in an earth-friendly manner. Don't brush aside the effect that seemingly small changes can have. There are things that you can begin doing right now, such as discovering a new use for that product you would ordinarily toss. Check if you're recycling often, and keeping the garbage you are generating to a minimum. You can begin living green in several ways by adopting a few of the suggestions provided.

Furnaces are not cheap to run, so make sure yours is working efficiently. Home heating is responsible for about 60% of a household's energy use. Operating efficiency will be increased by replacing the filter on a two-monthly cycle. Since you can frequently wash and use them, reusable filters are something to look at. They are durable, and, although they cost more to begin with, should save you money in the long run. Proper care of your furnace can be done in a couple of minutes, yet increase the efficiency by more than 50%.

Along with having your furnace work more efficiently, have a thermostat that you can program, so you can manage the temperature. There is no reason to be squandering power when no one is at home, or everyone is in bed. It affects both the earth and your checkbook negatively. If you have a thermostat that can be set several degrees cooler during the night in the winter, or warmer in the summer, and also when the house is empty, you will use a lot less electricity. When you get up in the morning, or return back home, it can be already programmed to where you would like it.

Hot water heaters likewise use too much energy, but wrapping yours in a fiberglas blanket will help. The blanket, which is available from any hardware store, will help retain heat in the heater. This is something you can do all by yourself, with ease, and the power you save will recoup the cost of the blanket within a year. Get yourself one of the new tankless water heaters when next your heater needs replacing. There is no tank full of water which has to be heated, and water is heated only when it is wanted. This way the planet is helped because significantly less energy is required, and your added bonus is the savings on your hot water bill.

You may not be inclined to do all of these suggestions, or any part of them, but living a green life doesn't mean that your life has to altogether change. Identify those changes you wish to make, and start today. Imagine the benefit for your neighborhood, if everyone followed just one of these changes. There's nothing to stop you from getting started by being the first person to take action. If you think these tips have merit, do let a family member or friend be aware of them.
