Although many children are bullied in schools today, most parents are unaware that this is happening to their kids and that it is a problem that needs to be remedied. The first step to fixing this problem is to make sure your children are comfortable sharing information with you and other people that can help them. Bullying is the topic and focus of this article, along with other related and important issues.

Due to the advent of the Internet, it is possible for your child to be bullied without physically seeing another person. Instead of being able to run home and be safe behind closed doors, bullies can now enter into your children's lives through the Internet. These bullies often lurk in chat rooms, and may even send e-mail to your children once they know what their address is. This type of bullying is just as damaging, so do not underestimate its power. This type of harassment is very detrimental because the words that are used can be just as harmful as physical abuse. An easy way to fix this problem is to limit the amount of time your children have online. Teach your kids how to block e-mails and friend requests on their e-mail accounts and their Facebook account if they have one. Social networks are notorious for this kind of activity, however, once you report what is going on to the social media site, the bullying should stop.

In case they do get bullied, if you enroll them in some type of self-defense class, they will be prepared and ready for this situation. Do not bully your own children into taking a self-defense class; the best thing to do is mention it to them as an option. This isn't to encourage them to fight, but to make them confident enough that they won't be a target. For the most part, bullies are cowards that only pick on defenseless people, something your child will not be once they are properly trained.

If your children do not get out much, they may not have the social skills necessary to handle a bully in such a situation. One way to take your child out of this category is by getting him or her involved in more activities, either during or after school. Letting your kids play football or basketball at their local school may help them greatly. Your children will definitely have less of a chance to be bullied because so many adults usually manage these activities. The social setting also helps them develop sociable skills which will assist them in life later. Your kids also need to be fascinated in the sports that they play or the club that they join to benefit the most so keep that in mind.

Proper attention always needs to be given when you find out your child may be being bullied. A child who is bullied is likely to develop self esteem problems that can last a lifetime. There are many ways to deal with bullying, and we've looked at a few in this article. As long as you have open communication between your children, you will be better able to help them regardless of what is happening.
