Name one chaotic place in your house and I am sure that the family coat closet is one of them. This area is usually chaotic because it is a small space where the whole family stores their bulkiest stuff.
But you can do something to make your family coat closet less chaotic. The rule here is the same as that of organizing your bedroom closet - the golden rule of closet organization - which is "a place for everything and everything in its place." If everyone in the family knows where there stuff is placed, you are surely in for a very organized coat closet. To achieve this, make sure to tell everyone in the family that they should do their part in keeping the closet neat and orderly.

First step to an organized coat closet is to make sure that the items there are the ones that are worn on a daily basis. Coats that are worn on a daily basis should be the only coats placed in the coat closet. Seasonal coats should be placed in the individual bedroom closets of the owners because these will take so much space.

Shoes placed in the coat closet should only be limited to two pairs per family member and these shoes should only be the ones that are worn on a daily basis. Shoes for special occasions or those that are out of season should be in the bedroom closets of the owners.
The top shelf of a coat closet should be reserved for hats, gloves, mittens and other accessories. You can keep a basket for each family member so they will know where their stuff is. If your coat closet is big, you can also use this for storing bicycle helmets and other safety gear.

You can also install hooks at the back of the closet for use of younger children who cannot reach the hangers when they hang their coats. Giving the young ones their own space in the coat closet will teach them independence. You'll be surprised that the young ones are more cooperative when it comes to taking care of their belongings.
Keeping check of the items inside the coat closet is also one way of keeping it organized. Once a season, check for items that are no longer usable and throw them away or donate them to your local thrift store or church to help free up space in your family coat closet. 998zxwppkz
