It's really easy to work when you have everything you need within your reach. Now, all you need is the proper way to get all these ingredients working together. In making one, of course, you need to complete the ingredients first, which includes:

6 cups of all-purpose flour
1 large egg
? cup of water
? cup unsalted butter (room temperature)
1 cup of brown sugar
1 cup shortening (melted and slightly cooled)
1 cup unsulphured molasses (spray the cup with some non-stick vegetable spray to keep it out from sticking)
1 tablespoon of ground ginger
1 teaspoon of ground nutmeg
1 teaspoon of ground cloves
1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
1 tablespoon of baking powder
1 teaspoon of pure vanilla extract

Preparation

Stepp 1: First, get a large bowl where you can sift the flour, ginger, nutmeg, cloves, cinnamon and baking powder and put it in one side. Next, in another bowl, it could be the bowl of your electric mixer with the paddle attachment beat the butter and sugar until it becomes light and fluffy.

Step 2: Beat the egg and molasses afterwards until it is well combined then mix the shortening and vanilla extract until it gets really smooth. Afterwards, gradually stir in the flour ingredients from the large bowl until everything is well incorporated and absorbed. Split the dough in 3 parts and wrap it in plastic and refrigerate for at least 2 hours or even overnight.

Step 3: The baking would not be complete without putting it inside the oven. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) and in a baking pan, put some baking sheets with a parchment paper. While waiting for the oven to heat-up roll the dough on a lightly floured surface making a ? inch thickness and cut it out as desired or with a use of a gingerbread cutter since you are making a gingerbread cookie. With a spatula, get the cut out cookies and place it in your ungreased baking sheets following a 1 inch spacing.

Step 4:Bake the cookies for 8 - 12 minutes depending on the size you desire. Small cookies will only take 8 minutes to finish and 12 minutes for larger ones. You will know it is cooked if the edges are already brown in color and looks dry, yet it will still be soft when you touch it.

step 5: Now the cookies are cooked, you may remove it from the oven and cool it on the baking sheet for a minute and when firm enough transfer it on the wire racks to cool completely. The most exciting part is frosting it with the icing you wanted or you may also use some raisins, candies or sprinkles to design your gingerbread cookie.
