Karma is a fascinating topic, one with a lot of viewpoints. Personally, I tend to see karma like a sort of cosmic scales, and that by cosmic law, the scales must balance. They may possibly have been out of balance for a very prolonged time period, but in time they WILL even out. Even that view, however, doesn't fully express how karma works.

The term 'karma' is most often referred to in terms of ‘positive’ or ‘negative'. To make the situation more difficult to understand, karma is usually 'weighted'.

A lot of Pagans speak about the 3-Fold or Nine-Fold Law (whatever you send out will come back to you three or nine times, respectively). While neither is fully accurate, both are examples of ‘weighted’ karma. To clarify, let's take the example of a young soul. The soul gets mad and starts a fight with someone, giving that person a black eye. That soul has just earned some bad karma. The scales tip. Later, a situation equivalent will occur to them, then the scales come. The karma is resolved. That is a one times return. So neither the Three-Fold Law, nor the Nine-Fold Law applied. Now, let us review the same experience, but with a really old soul. The scales tip negatively extra heavily this time, because that ancient soul should've known better. To to balance the scales again, the ancient soul may end up getting mugged or beaten severly, ending up in the hospital because of it. The end result is far more than 9x the original offense.

Practically every choice you make has some sort of karmic outcome. Sometimes the acts are so minor as to be unnoticeable, or they may be extremely major. It depends upon your actions, the results of those actions, the age or evolutionary level of one's soul ALONG WITH your INTENT. As an example:

Let’s say that Susan has a crush on Joe and would love for him to become hers. But Joe and Betty appear to be a thing, and have been dreaming of marriage. Susan is sure that if she were able to break those two up, then she could have Joe. So she spreads ugly stories about both of them to the general community. Her lies manage to find their way to the couple so the once happy couple break up. So even though there was no violence involved, Susan’s lies have really harmed two individuals. She has earned some huge karma.

Bad karma can be created not only by way of our behavior that directly affect other people, but additionally by our actions towards animals, and the environment. Somebody who leads a life of criminal behavior may well very well incur so much bad karma that it will take them possibly many lifetimes to pay it off.

So far, we’ve talked only of negative karma, but karma is also of a positive variety. When we do anything good as a result of compassion or love, that will also tip the scales in your favor. And that positiveness can either rebound to us by having a similar thing happen to us, or can assist in re-balancing the negative karma that we may well have incurred. However, doing good deeds simply to earn positive karma is not sufficient. Positive karma is accrued only when the good is performed as a result of a genuine desire to do good deeds, or by means of an act of compassion or love. Your reason behind the act is an important consideration. The same can be said for bad karma.

Karma is often considered to be a teacher, as it shows the soul the difference between right and wrong, good from bad, etc.

As previously mentioned, motivation will also have a direct bearing on karma. Sometimes, you may perhaps do something that, under normal circumstances would earn negative karma, but because of your motivation, will create good karma instead. Let’s take a look at a dramatic example: There ‘s sharp-shooter using a rooftop firing at and killing people. Unquestionably, he is incurring negative karma. You end up in what becomes a position to stop his killing, but the only way for you to accompish it, is by shooting him. Under these circumstances, you would incur negative karma if you chose to stand by and did nothing, but by shooting him and ending his killing spree, you'll gain good karma because your intent was the greater good.

The town where you dwell has karma. Whether positive or negative, this karma was created by the actions of the city in general in addition to the actions of the people that dwell in it. Let’s look at an example city: The politicians in this city are corrupt, and the citizens of the city are aware of it, but elect them anyway. That city will generate bad karma.

Just as communities may generate karma, so may nations. Saddam Hussein created karma when he invaded Kuwait, but so did his entire country. The planet also has karma.

There exists 1 additional aspect of karma to talk about, known as ‘karmic obligations’. This is a thing that often occurs throughout many lifetimes. In other words, you do some action during one lifetime creating karma that must be re-balanced during another. Suppose you do something that has a really negative effect on someone else, which you are unable to pay back during that lifetime. The obligation to that individual continues after you die. In your next lifetime, or the lifetime after that, you are going to be in the position of resolving that karmic debt. And likely not knowing the reason.
