Soccer in America is what the rest of the world knows as football, and football in the US is a totally different game. There must be eleven players for each team on the field for every play of an American football game. It takes many players to make an American football, even though only eleven play at any one time. Making a football team can be a difficult thing, especially if the number of people trying out is a large number.

Quite often, when trying out for a football team at the high school level, everyone makes the team. The bigger the school, the harder the competition, and the less chance of making the team. We will discuss some of the different positions and how to play them.

Behind each line, offensive or defensive, is the backfield. So with the defensive backfield you have the linebackers. These positions are usually seen between the defensive backs and the main defensive line.

There are many plays in a football game, and the linebackers are involved in most of them, covering the pass, stopping the run, and rushing the quarterback. Defensive backs are there to stop whatever the linemen and linebackers miss, making them the last line of defense. The secondary will be a minimum of three players whose roles are related to passing situations. During pass plays , it is the responsibility of the defensive backs to keep the receivers from catching the passes thrown by the quarterback. At the start of every play, regulations require the presence of seven players lined-up on the scrimmage line for the offense. Otherwise, the wide receivers, tight ends and running backs can fluctuate. It all depends on the particular play that has been called. You will see that a good deal is riding on the yards required for a first down. The offense must advance no less than ten yards with the onset of the first play. Now, they fight for the next first down and are given four downs, or plays, to get there. You will usually see a pass play when they have lost turf and need to manage twenty yards for a first.

Following every first down, the game is halted; at this time the teams are allowed to make any corrections. Given the status of the game changing constantly, new calls are frequent, but dependant on certain conditions. The matter of game strategies is a highly charged subject of conversation and can be either involved or easy. What you will typically find is a play book filled with perhaps dozens of possible plays, or much more. Hypothetically, for almost every circumstance, there is a play that would be assigned. These patterns range in degree from hazardous to somewhat secure.

Each week during the football season represents a new challenge that must be faced. This sport is about combat and knowing how to defeat your opponent each and every week. The opposing team must not be simply another team, but the opponent that you know how to beat.
