Just how do braces operate or rather how do orthodontic braces work, is a question that everybody considering orthodontic treatment wants an answer for. For starters, orthodontic braces or braces are orthodontic appliances that align misaligned teeth and correct several other oral problems in adults and children alike.

Almost everyone understands the value of properly aligned teeth and the impact that it has on how a person smiles, chews, and talks and on his/ her overall personality. Occasionally, crooked jagged teeth could cause great pain in eating and may also cause sores and wounds in the mouth. In severe scenarios, crooked teeth can result in the distortion of a patients face and even the persons jawline. Therefore, it has become important to fix these dental problems as early as possible and oral braces do that very effectively.

Braces can be made from various elements like ceramic, metal and plastic and also come in numerous colors. They could also be detachable or bonded to each of the teeth depending on the severity of the teething condition. Today, braces can be bonded to the lingual side of the teeth, for those who wish to disguise them.

Basic Components of Oral Braces

Oral braces are made up of four simple and crucial elements.

Brackets: These are the most critical component of orthodontic braces that is fastened to the teeth. These are generally made of metal or ceramic. These are affixed to every tooth when applying the orthodontic braces.

Bonding Material: This is the form of cement which is used to affix the brackets to each of the teeth.

Arch Wire: This is the slender metal wire, running from one of the brackets to another, gently applying pressure to each tooth.

Ligature Elastics: Ligature elastics are little, colored elastics that hold the arch wire into the bracket. These are better known as 'o-rings' and have to be changed at frequent intervals. Certain braces, also known as self-ligating braces don't require o-rings.

Piecing together all of these components, the braces will align teeth, correct uneven tooth bites and help straighten bent teeth.

Braces: How Do They Work

Now that we know the primary elements of orthodontic braces, it's going to be much easier to understand how dental braces work on teeth. In simple words, braces get the job done by applying a continual pressure or force on your teeth. The braces have to remain on your teeth for around two years, during which they will apply continual force on your teeth to help your teeth relocate. For this, the teeth must be made temporarily loose, to ensure the tissues encompassing the tooth are expanded into the loosened socket. Once the tooth starts moving towards the loosened tooth socket and falls in position, the bone of the tooth will fill in around it in the new position and solidify it in this position.

So now that you are aware of how oral braces work, you can now obtain them confidently. Make sure that you take satisfactory care of braces and follow all the guidelines required to receive the preferred outcome.
