Golden Retrievers are medium-sized dogs which grow only upto 24 inches or 60cms in height. The female of the breed is usually a little smaller and grow upto a height of bewteen 51 and 56cms which is about twenty to 22 inches in height. They tend to look a little bigger than they really are due to their hair. The hair of these canines tend to make them look a great deal more bulkier than they actually are.
These dogs have a strong similarity to the Labrador retriever. This is not because the Labrador has figured in its advancement. So far as can be surmised, the Labrador was not even known in England when the Golden retriever was created. They however share similar ancestry within the St Johns water dog which may be one explanation why they look so alike.
They do have their own differences. Apart from the longer coat and coloring, the Golden retriever is on average slightly smaller sized when compared to the Lab. The Golden Retrievers only look bigger simply because they have more hair, they're really quite skinny and weigh only in between 30 and thirty-five kgs, a regular Labrador will tend to weigh much more. They are also a lot faster and have much more stamina than the Labs even though they do not possess the kind of explosive power that the Lab is capable of.
In temperament as well the Golden retriever is somewhat different. It is much more energetic when compared to the Lab and therefore requires more exercise. Their gun dog heritage exhibits in their exceptional patience, plus they can sit for hrs without any movement while the hunter waits for game after which dash around retrieving it. Apart from this they are extremely comparable in disposition to the Lab and are extremely kind and mild. In fact they are very non aggressive dogs and finding one that's, is very very difficult. Even though they are exceptionally intelligent dogs, they are very obedinet at the same time.
They're the perfect pets for just about any type of home and the only reason why they're not as well-liked as the Lab is that they shed hair constantly throughout the year. Although the Lab too does this, its hair is smaller and is therefore more manageable.
