I would think that everyone out there knows about having a firearm for self defense. They are great if you happen to have it in your hand when you need it. However, in my experience, that is usually not the case. Violence usually just erupts, or breaks out instantly and without warning.

Most martial arts teach a number of different kinds of weapons skills. The problem is that you can't walk around carrying almost all of the weapons that are taught. You would probably be arrested on sight in most cases. In the other cases you would look like an idiot. But there are a couple of weapons that are very similar to the martial arts version that you can carry with you and not look obvious. Let's take a minute or two to discuss a few common, readily available weapons that can be used for self defense.

The first one is so obvious that you may not have ever considered it. Car keys. Yep, good ole car keys can be used as a weapon. I know you are wondering how right about now so I'll go ahead and tell you. Put the keys in the palm of your hand and make a fist. Let one or two of the keys protrude out from between your fingers. This is a nasty twist to brass knuckles. Punch with the keys to the face, eyes, throat, and any other soft tissue area that presents itself. You can imagine the damage those steel prongs will do to human flesh.

Certain types of key chains have keys on two opposite ends that are separated by a piece of nylon or some similar material. With these types of key chains you can hold one end of the keys and use it to sling the heaviest end like a mini whip to the face and eyes of your attacker. You can also buy key chains that are made especially for self defense.

The next common weapon you probably already carry on you is a comb or brush. Many men carry a pocket comb in their back pocket and can get it out quickly. You can use the comb or brush to slash and rake the soft tissue areas with, especially the eyes and throat. The handle end of the brush can be used to gouge and strike with in areas such as under the nose, the temples, eyes, etc.

The third weapon most people never consider is a walking cane or walking stick. Canes and sticks are versatile as they can be used to block, strike and jab with. An umbrella can also be used in the same manner. The pointed metal end is excellent for jabbing with. Hapkido is a Korean martial art style that teaches numerous cane techniques. You can also buy books that teach you how to use a cane for self defense at http://mykarateplace.com. Once again, if you don't want to carry a cane you can pick up a stick, if you can find one, and use it the same way.

I spoke earlier about having a firearm. It is illegal in most states to carry a firearm unless you are a law enforcement officer or have a special permit. There is another alternative that is legal. Tasers and stun guns are readily available for sale. If you decide to use one however you should keep it in your hand or on your belt while traveling through dangerous or suspicious areas. Once again, if you can't get to it quickly it probably won't do you any good. And ladies, if it's in your purse you probably will never get the chance to get it out. Remember, violence usually breaks out suddenly.

Lastly, when all else fails, look for a bottle, telephone, book, whatever is loose and available. Garbage can lids can be used for shields. Just about anything can be used as a weapon .If you think about it for a few minutes you can probably come up with a lot more ideas of things you can use for self defense.
