It seems that the highest risk of being burgled is when you re a student. If your youngster is leaving for college life, here are some pointers to help them stay secure. At one time your son or daughter went off to university weighed down by their books. Apart from the odd student lamp and the outdated portable TV from their childhood, that was it as far as anything vaguely desirable to the burglar was concerned.

Nowadays, students seem to own more expensive gadgetry than anyone else in the family. Apart from the obligatory laptop, their televisions, i pods, singing and dancing phones and all sorts of electronic gadgetry seem to take up all the room in the modern student accommodation. So it s hardly surprising that a third of students are victims of burglary each year.

Shared accommodation creates the most problems when it comes to security. Imagine the total value of up to four of each of the goodies mentioned above and you can see the value to the burglar. In the excitement of meeting their new flatmates and setting up their own territories, students ignore the problems of lack of security and they re more likely to look for things like proximity to shops and bars than a safe environment. Quality security features such as secure locks and burglar alarms don t necessarily come as standard and landlord’s take the view that students wouldn t be willing to pay the rental to make this a wise investment.

It s quite common for student s belongings to be covered under their parent’s home insurance. You need to check this out and if they need to insure their own belongings you ll need to make sure they don t overlook it either. Being so conversant with the internet, one of their first tasks won t take too long if they get on line and find an independent insurance adviser who ll save them the hassle of individual quotes by searching some out for them. There are some brokers who will specialize in insurance for students, but better to look at the whole market.

It s usually very easy to find out how student accommodation gets broken into. One student opens a window and then goes out. The others may not realize they re open and with a lack of Mum and Dad to chase it up, out they go. Student accommodation tends to be occupied for longer periods than traditional family homes, at least in the daytime. Student timetables mean there are people coming and going all the time and this often means there s some one in virtually all day, which is a good thing.

Evenings are the time when they re more likely to be out. They need a reminder to leave a light and some noise on, and the curtains closed once it s dark. I know you ve spent the last years telling them to turn the light out, turn down the music, etc., but it s a different thing now. If the student house is away from the college accommodation, it s normally easy to pick it out. Pizza boxes, drinks cans and road cones can often be found growing in the garden. This shrieks the fact that students are living there to the thief. Some care and thought can hopefully avoid trouble. Better safe than sorry.
