Autobody painting or car painting can be done in a lot of ways. Although there are more ways to paint a car, all these techniques use the same steps. No matter what brand of paint or what color of paint you use, the same set of autobody painting techniques apply. This also holds true if you are painting with graphics and solid colors. The only difference in painting methods depends on the quality you expect on the outcome and what your budget is.

Preparation of the car's surface is the same with any type of paint and type of vehicle you have. In addition, prepping the surface is the most important step in getting an autobody painting done. It requires a lot of work and patience to get rid of the dents, dirt and dings on the car but it will pay off in the end.

Once the car is already prepped, you must start by using 80-grit sandpaper and a dual-action sander in order to sand down the car or the part where you will apply the paint. Once you're done, you have to wipe the vehicle with grease remover and wax so that it will be free from sand dust. It will be a big help if you have an air compressor. Just use the open end of the compressor to blow sand dust off of your vehicle.

After this, you can use masking tape to cover the areas that you don't want to paint. Spray one coat of primer on the vehicle's surface and allow it to dry. Once it is completely dry, use a block of sander and 120-grit sandpaper to sand the entire vehicle. This will reveal a lighter color. The dents will remain black for the outer layer of the primer that you sprayed on the vehicle will not get sanded. Any for of spot will show as well. You must repair these areas and apply new primer and sand it again using the 120-grit sandpaper.

Again, wipe your car with grease remover and wax for a couple of times. go over the vehicle using a tack rag to ensure that no other objects such as sand, oil and dust particles are on the car. This will prevent any spots when you apply the paint.

You are now ready to spray the paint. Spray paints can be used but only if you are on a tight budget. If you really like your car to have a nice shine and finish, it is way cheaper to have your autobody painting done by a professional. Start painting on the high areas and work your way doen. Always start at the front portion of the car toward the rear end.
