On the other hand, forums are organized on a certain site, an interest or something else that is very narrow. Most important aspect that you should note is that it has lesser members than the newsgroups.
Some of the newsgroups that you may have heard of have been around for quite a long time now. When we speak of a long time that means years and years of existence, which indeed can be compared to some forums that may just last while there are still people who are patronizing it. Although some forms may still a bit longer than any ordinary forums, it must be because it has been backed up and put up by a certain company to promote any kind of services or products and that is for that purpose alone.
It is indeed interesting to note that Usenet is much older than the Internet itself, that's why it shouldn't be a wonder if you later on realize that Usenet has a bit larger follower than the net itself.
Another factor that makes Usenet newsgroup stand out from an internet user is the fact that most Usenet users are considered to computer savvy. As you may know one just can't use or access Usenet if you haven't got any a background when it comes to using your computer.
However, if you happen to start using such kind of server, you can be assured that later on. It will be easier for you to access any type of server that you may come across with on the net.
