If you're wanting to learn how to play football you will be in for a long but very fun ride. There is definitely a lot more to learning the game than first meets the eye as it's not just about learning the rules. Experience is definitely the best way to discover everything about the game. It doesn't matter how many books you read or videos you watch, you cannot replace the first hand experience you get from playing. You'll make some mistakes, get important information and most importantly improve. Another way of looking at this is to consider football, and other sports, like life. Anyway, we will keep on subject and look at more about football.

The person who is most recognizable in American football is the quarterback. This position is perhaps the most widely recognized even by people who know absolutely nothing about the game. Once the players lined up, and the ball is in the hands of a quarterback, the fun begins. Depending on the particular call for the play, the quarterback will either pass the ball, hand it off to a running back or will run the ball himself. The quarterback's additional responsibilities include having a position of leadership within the team.

Of course each team has offensive and defensive players. The judgment of the quarterback and the coach may cause significant changes in the defensive line. Some trick plays require only four defensive linemen. This is the front line, and it is up to them to engage the offensive line. Keeping the running backs at bay on the offensive team is the primary goal of the defense. A great strategy for the defense is to get into the offensive backfield and try to sack the quarterback before he can pass. Depending on the situation, the defensive line can blitz the offensive backfield with an all out rush to cause a loss of yardage.

If you play football, or watch it on TV, you undoubtedly have seen how quick the game can change. Football is not a fixed and predictable sport, especially at the professional level. Very similar to a chess game, those calling the plays need to react to what the opposing team is now doing. Linebackers on the defensive side are the main component of the team used to get to the quarterback. At the last few minutes of the game, a blitz is usually done to ensure that the opposing team does not score. The trade-off is the blitz can leave the defensive field open, and if it is stopped there can be a successful pass with large gains. Of course there are many rules among all three levels that overlap or are the same. So, when a player transfers from one level to another it should be easier. Remember, when you're learning to play football your most experienced source of info will be your coach.
