RFID or Radio Frequency Identification Technology is used for easy identification, detection and tracking of a person or an object through the transmission of radio waves.

Radio frequency identification technology is a form of communication technology which is used by organizations as an identification tool. This technology makes use of a small device known as an RFID tag which is used for the transmission of radio waves. Each object contains a unique identification number which is transmitted through these radio waves.

RFID technology uses three basic devices for communication: RFID tag, reader and a computer system. Being a simple wireless technology, RFID can be used across many applications as it does not have a complicated infrastructure and also is not affected by harsh environmental conditions. The RFID tag contains a chip for storing the data. The reader transmits radio waves which are detected and received by the RFID tag and stored in the RFID chip in form of encoded data. This data is usually a unique identification number of an object being tracked and help in providing other information related to the object. The encoded data once read by the reader is then converted to digital form. The reader then sends the digital data to a computer system for systematic organization and processing.

RFID technology has overcome the limitation of bar code readers which require direct contact with an object for providing information. This technology also offers greater flexibility and ease of use as it can store as well as read data and the data can be easily updated. This technology has become popular in mostly all software development companies.

RFID tags are attached to objects in retail stores to prevent theft. They have a very good response time there is no need for the customers to waste their time in queues to get their purchases billed. This technology has been implemented in popular retail stores like Wal-Mart. RFID tags are commonly used to identify and track animals. They are also used to track moving vehicles and other objects being transported and thus they are very useful for supply chain management. They are used in warehouses to keep track of raw materials and finished goods. This technology is used by almost all offshore software development organizations to enhance system security.

The wireless technology of RFID can also be used for developing wireless access cards such as wireless smart cards and credit cards. These cards will use RFID chip and thus will not require contact with the system for processing transactions and for accessing information. RFID tags are used by hospitals for the identification of patients and objects. They are used for ensuring patient safety and security. This technology has also reduced a lot of manual and paper work and thus the efficiency of health care centers and organizations has improved. Many mobile application development companies are also using this technology to make all the phone features and functions accessible by a single touch. The dynamic features of RFID have given the firms using it an increased competitive advantage. This technology is all set to revolutionize the entire wireless communication system in times to come.
