Lyme borreliosis or simply Lyme disease is regarded as an emerging infectious disease. It is causes by three species of bacteria which belong to "genus Borrelia". In the US, "Borrelia burgdorferi sensu stricto" is the culprit while "Borrelia garinii" and "Borrelia afzelii" are the culprits in European nations

Where did Lyme disease come from?

This disease got its name from Lyme, CT in the US. This is due to the fact that there were several cases of this condition in this city in year 1975. It was only later, in year 1978, when Allen Steere realized that the disease was tick-borne. Up to year 1981, the real cause of the condition was a mystery until it was identified by Willy Burgdorfer.

Until today, Lyme disease remains as the most common tick-borne disease throughout the Northern Hemisphere. Humans can infected with Borrelia when they are bitten by infected ticks which belong to the few species of hard ticks.

What are the symptoms of Lyme disease?

Early symptoms are:

. Headache
. Fever
. Depression
. Fatigue
. A circular skin rash known as "erythema migrans"

Later symptoms (when left untreated) would affect the:

. Heart
. Joints
. Central nervous system

Lyme Disease Treatment

The symptoms and the infection can be treated with antibiotics, especially if treatment is given early. However, with inadequate or delayed treatment, more serious symptoms may arise. When this happens, the disease becomes more disabling and difficult to eliminate.

Are there natural cures for Lyme disease?

Yes, there are natural remedies for Lyme disease. These cures have a lot to do with sodium intake. According to studies, there may be a connection between a low sodium diet and Lyme disease, fibromyalgia, Alzheimer's disease and chronic fatigue syndrome. It is this study that led health experts to believe that a natural Lyme remedy with sodium can help treat the condition. Since too much sodium can affect your blood pressure, in moderate amounts over time, bacteria that cause Lyme disease can be eliminated.

What are the preventive measures for Lyme disease?

. If you are living in a tick-infested area, make it a habit to wear long sleeved shirts, closed shoes and pants.
. Use insect repellants if there are lots of insects in your area.
. Use light colored clothing to identify them crawling on your body right away.
. Never walk with your bare feet outside.
. Don't sit for long periods of time on the ground.
. Follow a Lyme disease diet which comprises of foods that can eliminate toxins from your body. You can drink lots of water; drink fruit juices; eat vegetables, fibrous food and those that are rich in essential fatty acids.
. Use unrefined sea salt instead of table salt.
