BLOCKING WEBSITES

These days, it is only normal for offices and companies to block access to non-work related websites. Putting yourself in their shoes, if they allow employees to access movie downloads, game or even social networking sites then they'll end up wasting company time on such sites, right? Studies also show that employees become less productive when they are distracted by other matters.

The problem is, no matter how you block these sites; Internet- and computer-savvy individuals do find ways to unblock them. When you think about it, you actually don't need to be a computer geek to know how to do this. You can just search it in Google (which you most probably still have access to) and you'll find lots of helpful methods, steps and tips to unblock websites.

To block websites, ITs of companies use firewalls, server proxies and other utilities. Thus, if it is actually the website that is blocking you, there is only one thing to do. If there's something between you and the site that's blocking you then there are several solutions to consider.

How to Unblock Sites that Block You

If it is only the IP address or the range of the IP address that is being blocked, you just need to change the IP address temporarily or permanently. This is since the block is just designed to block where you're coming from.

How to Unblock Sites you are Blocked From

When access to a certain website is blocked by a so-called "content filter", the best thing to do is to use an anonymous proxy. You can get a list through a reliable proxy site list. This is since this type of block is designed for blocking where you're going to as "content filters" are designed to bock access to sites that are regarded as objectionable or undesirable.

BLOCKING WEBSITES

If, on the other hand, you want to block websites, this is also very easy to do. Most parents these days, fear for their child's safety online so they block sites. Enticing as it may seem, not everyone in sites like MySpace, Orkut and even Facebook can be trusted.

Apart from wasting too much time online, most parents fear the activities their young children are doing online. They fear the though that their children would interact with complete strangers and even share some personal information with them. Online predators are a very popular threat these days.

If using a type of parental control software seems too much for you then you can try to:

. Educate your child. Tell him or her about the dangers of sharing personal information on the Net with complete strangers.
. Put your computer in the living area so that you can see what they're doing on the PC and on the Net.
. Check the social networking sites your child has joined. Look into their friends list and text notes or private messages they have.
. Block certain sites on your home PC by:

Step 1: Click START. Select RUN. Type: notepad c:WINDOWSsystem32driversetchosts

Step 2: When a new notepad window opens, it will have some cryptic information. Go to the last line. Hit ENTER. Type the following:

"127.0.0.1 orkut.com
127.0.0.1 facebook.com
127.0.0.1 myspace.com"

SAVE and exit. When you type this, none of these sites will open on your PC. It will also be easy for you to block sites using this technique. To remove the ban, just open the same file and delete it.
