As severe weather continues to ravage portions of the United States, one story that has not received a tremendous amount of coverage is the struggles of home health care and hospice patients. In Alabama, Alacare Home Health and Hospice is one organization that has been working diligently to locate and assist their clients in the aftermath of the devastating tornadoes that have recently passed through . While many families have been hit hard, home health care patients may be dealing with additional critical issues like medication or medical supply shortages.

Over the years home health care agencies have proven valuable assets to their communities during severe weather and other natural disasters. The most recent tornadoes in Joplin, Missouri left multiple home health care agencies completely destroyed. Amazingly, Access Home Health managed to become operational in a matter of days despite having their headquarters destroyed.

It has been a rough year in terms of weather for Hospice patients, as the winter left many patients cut off from caregivers and other service providers . Seasons Change Home Health Care, located in Pigeon, Michigan was one such agency that had to deal with the difficulties of servicing clients in this scenario.
In these hazardous conditions it can be easy for the caregiving professionals to overlook their own safety in trying to reach their troubled clients . Despite the heroic efforts put in by these health care professionals, these organizations go out of their way to help maintain the health and safety of their own staffs . "Over the holidays, one of Our Home Health Aids had a fire in their home and I collected food and clothing for the family from employees and friends. They have a three year old son and were staying in a hotel temporarily. We make it our duty to care for our own as well," said Diana Hennrick, Business Development Manager at Seasons Change Home Health Care.

So while the nation continues to reassemble communities ravaged by the weather of the past year, keep in mind that home health care service providers are doing their part to keep the handicapped and homebound healthy and safe.
