I just purchased an iPad and have used it for a week. This is a brief review.

First, it is more than a big iPod. I have used iPods for several years now and the size of the screen makes a huge difference in the way that the device is used and what it can do. It is much more usable for email and web browsing than the iPod. Gaming is a different experience. I have downloaded very serious programs from word-processing, spreadsheet, graphics, time-management, and databasing that I would never have imagined using with the iPod.

Second, despite the lighted screen, the iPad's battery life is similar to that of the iPod and as good or better than the Kindle. For example, when I turn down the screen brightness for reading in the dark, I can use the device intermittently for reading on a 15-hour flight from Hong Kong to Newark and not have to recharge it. In continuous use, I think that the iPad battery will last 6 hours. The battery life is better than the Kindle. The ability to read the iPad in darkness is also a great advantage on airplanes and in cars.

Third, the screen is brilliant and its size allows you to browse the web almost as well as a regular computer. Reading books on it is also much better and causes less eyestrain. Photos on the big screen are stunning. You can read books that are hyperlinked. PDF files are very readable. This is the book for boardrooms, meetings, documents, manuals, textbooks, and even exams.

Fourth, there is already remarkable software for the device. The iBook software is stunning. It mimics page turning in detail, including showing you the print on the back of the page as you turn it. Kindle software works on the iPad as well or better than it does on the Kindle because of the touch screen. You can flip the page forward or backwards with a finger or thumb from anywhere on the screen. I am using iWorks (Keynote, Pages, Numbers), Omnigraffle, Omnigraph, and many other serious programs.

What are some things that are missing?
. No camera or USB. As many people point out, there is no camera and not USB port. But, the iPad does have a port that connects to any USB device (including computers). It has bluetooth that allows you to communicate with an iPhone, for example, to use the camera on the iPhone. The wifi works quite well, exactly as it does on the iPod. There are lots of programs that allow you to transfer files from the iPad to your computer through wifi (mobile me) without having to connect the iPad to your computer. If and when you connect the iPod to iTunes on your computer, it synchronizes the iPad to your computer.

The iPad is a little heavier and a bit awkward to hold in your hands while you are typing. Keynotes, the presentation software for iPad, is excellent, but it would be nice to be able to present directly to a projector. The onscreen keyboard is okay but a real keyboard would make a big difference. A cable to download pictures directly from your camera would also be nice.
