If you are searching for a deluxe holiday in the sunlight that allows you to benefit from some history and culture, you will find Caribbean cruises that stay at Havana tough to beat.

A cruise around the Caribbean is assured to be a restful experience, with sunshine, soaring temperatures, stunning scenery, rum cocktails along with superb cuisine combining to make you feel like you are enjoying a touch of paradise.

But you will also notice there is plenty to do and see while you are in the region - if you want to tear yourself away from the sun lounger.

Stops at Fort de France, Montego Bay, Bridgetown and Castries will present you with the chance to experience the abundant and mixed culture of the area, but the Cuban capital Havana is liable to be the highlight of every voyage around the Caribbean.

It has a fascinating history as one of the important trading ports on the route between the new world and Europe. While being founded by the Spanish in the 16th century, Havana has been occupied by the British and Americans, before ultimately falling into the hands of Fidel Castro's supporters in the 1950s.

A excursion of the city will allow you to witness how the assorted settlers and rulers have influenced the local architecture, with neo-classical, colonial and art deco structures all familiar sights.

There are a host of landmarks you won't want to ignore - from the beautiful cathedral, to the Morro fortress and the National Capital Building, that acts as the seat of government - but you are also certain to take pleasure in merely walking about and drinking in the environment.

Havana has a number of fascinating museums to go to see, including one based in Ernest Hemmingway's past residence. The villa is packed with the late author's belongings, including his large library, and is a real treat for any person with an interest in literature.

While they might not be museums in the traditional sense, you are also expected to take pleasure in a trip to one of the local cigar factories to see the world's best torcedors in action along with a visit to the Bocoy Rum Factory to hear how the sugarcane spirit is prepared.

And rum is, of course, expected to star in every night out in Havana, with the spirit an ingredient in several of the cocktails you will have in the course of an evening at Tropicana. A outing to the upmarket club is the ideal way to round off a day in the Cuban capital, as you will be treated to a show featuring traditional music and more than 200 dancers in extravagant costumes performing excited routines - a display that is guaranteed to live long within your memory.
