Handball is indeed a wonderful game which is very well appreciated by people throughout the globe. It is referred by several names such as team handball, Olympic handball or European handball. Even though, it is an indoor game but we can still observe outdoor forms of this game too. One of the major points to remember is that this game is not the American handball.

Handball is usually played between two teams which have seven players each and the team's throw in the ball in the opposite team's goal and in such a way the scoring point is made in the game. After the two plays of thirty minute each, the goals of each team are summed up to declare the winning team.

The game of handball is indeed quick and swift and one of the features of this game is that it actually allows body contact between the players but it comes with certain restrictions and rules. The rules during body contact is that it should only take place when the offensive player undergoes 'player sandwich' and finds the defensive player right in front of him/her.

However, penalties are issued to other contacts which are not approved of in the general rules of the game. Mainly, contacts from the backside or from the side are not considered to be valid. However, in contrast to basketball which only provides five fouls in a game, handball has no limit on the number of faults and is often termed as a positive defense mechanism to the attacking team's pace.

In a game of handball, almost all the times both the teams usually score more than twenty goals. Scoring more than thirty is also not uncommon. But, scoring was a huge problem in the initial stages of the game and the scorings were quite identical to ice hockey matches. After, the offensive play was improved in the 1980s; an increase in the scoring was noticed in the matches.

Even though, records have been found in the Middle Ages that there were games which were similar to handball in the medieval France, yet today's game of handball was created to the end of 19th century by a Danish gym teacher who was the first person to make up the rules for the game in around 1898 and published the same in 1906. An international game of handball was officially played in 1925 between Germany and Belgium in the men's category.

The two teams in the game are made up of seven players each of which one of them will be the goalkeeper and the six others will be the field players. The game is usually played in two parts in which each part will be of thirty minutes and two referees are actually needed for a game of handball. Strict penalties are imposed upon those players who do not play in adherence to the rules.

The game of handball is well-known throughout the world and is an amusing sport which entices the players and spectators alike and creates sportsmanship in the players to play together as a single team.
