There are many bad drivers on the roadways, but how do you avoid them? The answer is that you cannot avoid bad drivers. The only thing that you can do is be a better driver yourself. By being more vigilant on the roadways, you can save yourself the hassle and trouble of getting involved in accidents with other people who aren t paying attention.

When you are on the road, there are so many things to distract you from what you should actually be paying attention to: driving. For example, there are stoplights, other drivers, unexpected road hazards, bad weather, road construction and pedestrians. Earlier in the week, I was driving on the road to go to an appointment, and there was another driver in the lane beside me. The person was in their car on their cell phone having a conversation with another passenger in the car and texting all at the same time. If that is not dangerous, then I am not sure what is. There are many people who think that they can multi task while driving. However, what most people fail to realize is that they shouldn t be multi tasking while they are driving. In fact, the only thing that you should be doing while you are driving is paying attention to the things and circumstances surrounding you.

It only takes a fraction of a second to become involved in a vehicular accident. What does this translate to? Take, for instance, the amount of time it takes someone to glance down at their middle console to get something out or to even change a song on their cd player or change a radio station. In that amount of time, you could get into an accident if you suddenly encounter an animal crossing the street or a child running after a ball. Another part of the problem is that many drivers feel as if driving is their right and not their privilege. Imagine what the roadways would look like if everyone just drove the way that they wanted without due regard for the safety of other people. You would never want to get on the roads again.

Whenever you are driving on the road or are preparing to go for a drive somewhere, you need to be cognizant of other people around you. If you are not sure whether or not you should go out for a drive, pay attention to how your body feels. If you are tired, you are probably not in the best position to be driving because you are not going to be nearly as mentally alert as you should be. Being tired while driving is almost as dangerous (if not more so) than driving while intoxicated. Your reflexes are slowed down and your reaction time is greatly reduced, thereby increasing the chances that you will involve yourself in a motor vehicle accident with another driver or vehicle. Too many times when drivers are involved in accidents, they wonder what they could have possibly done to avoid being in the accident. There is nothing that they could have done to prevent the accident other than not be as distracted. Turn off the radio. Ask passengers to remain quiet while you are driving. Whatever you have to do to keep yourself focused while driving, this is what you have to do. Your safety and the safety of the other drivers around you is simply more important.
