The historical past associated with Salsa isn't easily determined. It is a blend of many Latin and Afro-Caribbean dances that has been refined significantly with time. Several of these dances were blended together to build what we now call Salsa. Let's have a look at Mambo, for example. It is very much like Salsa - they share many of the comparable moves and also have the pattern of six steps over 8 counts of music.
