Salsa is a great dance - entertaining, passionate, romantic and highly sensual. And if you did not know it already - it is also really simple to learn. Salsa instructors have a saying - if you can walk, you can dance Salsa. And they are right.

If you'd like to start learning Latin American dances, then Salsa is an excellent choice. In this article we will take a quick peek in to the history of Salsa.

The historical past associated with Salsa isn't easily determined. It is a blend of many Latin and Afro-Caribbean dances that has been refined significantly with time. Many believe that Salsa came from Cuba or Puerto Rico. Nowadays, it's is very popular throughout the world and still continues to be one of the main dances in both Cuba and Puerto Rico.

Where did the word Salsa come from? In Spanish language, Salsa means a spicy, hot sauce. The Spanish word for sauce was apparently connected to latin dances in 1930s, when a Cuban composer by the name of Ignacio Pinerio composed the famous song Echale Salsita. Shortly afterwards, Salsa became a trendy name for many Latin American dances, like mambo, rhumba, danzon, cha cha, son, guguanco, cubop, guajira merengue, and others.

Several of these dances were blended together to build what we now call Salsa. Let's have a look at Mambo, for example. It is very much like Salsa - they share many of the comparable moves and also have the pattern of six steps over 8 counts of music.

Throughout the years quite a few different styles of Salsa appeared: New York style, LA style, Puerto Rican style, Cuban style, Colombian or Cumbia style, Rueda style, Cali style, and Miami style just to name a few. They may have distinct step patterns, moves, turns, timing and so forth.

Whatever the style, Salsa is one of the more popular Latin dances with well established communities all over the world. It is just the thing for beginners and one of the least complicated dances to learn. This is in fact precisely why it's so popular. Bear in mind, if you can walk, you can Salsa.
