Air Conditioner Trouble - Review the Possibilities
Here are some of the basic principles for air conditioner troubleshooting. For both central home air conditioner or window air conditioners, the first thing to check is whether the unit is getting proper power. If the unit is using a 220 volt power, you need to be sure that the proper voltage is getting to the unit. Same for 110 volt units. A voltage meter can be used to assure that the voltage is correct.
For window air conditioning units the voltage can also be checked before and after the thermostat. If the voltage is being supplied to the thermostat; however, not from it, then the thermostat probably needs to be replaced. This may be a very common problem. One other important thing that you need to check is the fan motor voltage. The fan on window air conditioners runs both the indoor blower and the condenser fan. If that motor fails, then its compressor may only just run for a very short time; however, it will overheat and then shut off. Continued operation, just like this, will only result in a failure in the compressor. This motor will also be replaced economically for a larger window air conditioners; but for the much smaller ones, the cost of replacement can be more than one brand new unit.
Central Air Conditioners for the home are more complex and there are more things that can go wrong. As with the window air conditioner the thermostat can also be a problem. The central air conditioner thermostat may only have a 24 - volt power going to it. So, you just do not try looking for a high voltage there. In some of the units, the voltage comes from the outdoor unit, while for the others, the voltage will be supplied by the indoor air handler or teh furnace. Most of the central air conditioning will be supplied by those indoor air handlers or the furnace. If the air conditioner is for cooling only the unit will usually have only two wires going to the condenser unit. Make sure that you have 24 volts across those wires.
As you may have seen, there are some simple things that agood handyman or a creative homeowner may try checking out. There are also some things that will require the specialized tools and experience of the professional.
