The emergence of online violin lessons has been of great benefit to those who would like to learn the violin. Digital programs allow almost anyone to be able to learn violin. While great in many respects, they aren't for everyone. Once you know what the drawbacks are, you can work around them though. As you read this article, you'll learn about the perks and the cons of choosing to learn violin through this medium.

First on the pro list is price. With minimal delivery costs, digital products don't need to be marked up. The creators can make a profit at almost any price, so you are purely paying for value. The other thing is that you only have to pay once and you can reuse these fiddle lessons again and again. That investment is less than one private lesson most of the time.

You'll also note the convenience of these programs. You don't need to leave your home for the lesson, but you don't need to stay home either. Considering the prevalence of mobile devices that can access the internet, you can learn almost anywhere you like. That means you don't have to reschedule your lessons when you go on vacation. Nor do you need to spend the time and money to drive to and from the lesson, so you have more time to practice or do anything else you like.

The first potential drawback is that you don't have someone to correct your form. This is only a potential drawback as if you pay enough attention to the lessons and videos in the first place, this won't be necessary.

Another drawback is you don't have to play on a schedule. This may sound like a perk, but some have problems getting their practice time in. If you're around people who love the fiddle and play it often, that dedication will be absorbed into your mindset. This environment will keep your motivation to learn high.

If you can get around other violinists and practice with them, you'll be able to ignore this drawback. The ideal is if you have a friend who wants to learn as well and practice with him or her. You can keep each other to a schedule. Secondarily, you could ask or pay someone to force you to practice. This is only needed until you've established the habit of playing on a regular basis. After that it's hard to stop.

I've lumped schedule and motivation together because if you play on a schedule for long enough, you don't need to be motivated to do it. It just becomes second nature.

So who should choose online violin lessons and who should choose group or private lessons?

If you're the type that tends to need additional help, prefers working with people directly, or lacks creativity when it comes to making yourself practice, choose offline. The motivation of wasting a lot of money on lessons for nothing is pretty big for most people.

If this is more of a passing curiosity or you lack a big budget, choose online. If you forget things easily or want extra practice, get the online lessons, even if you have private or group lessons. It is, after all, only thirty dollars in most cases.
