Doing a home energy audit is a smart way of keeping your energy use in check. This way you can keep track of the different appliances you use at home and how much energy these appliances use. A home energy audit, if done properly, can help you cut your monthly utility bills since doing so will make you conscious of your energy use at home.

Many people do not know that even if their appliances are turned off, these still consume energy when they are left plugged to an outlet because they create phantom loads. Also, remote controlled appliances that are placed on ready mode also consume a considerable amount of energy. There are also parts of the house that can contribute to high energy consumption such as attics and fireplaces.

Why Do You Need a Home Energy Audit?
Experts generally recommend a home energy audit because it maximizes the use of energy at home. Energy that is used efficiently can contribute to the reduction of utility bills and that would mean a lot of savings for most people. In many places the electrical company will perfomr an energy audit at no charge.
Homeowners who have large electric bills can benefit the most from a home energy audit because this way, you maximize the use of energy in your house. One way is to focus on areas like the attic, the ceilings and the fireplace.

What do you use your attic for? Most attics are used to store the things that we no longer use but still find important, thus we keep them. But did you know that if your attic does not have proper insulation and air circulation, the things that you have stored there will eventually turn to junk? Plus, attics that do not have proper air circulation will also destroy the roofing in the long run.

You also have to consider your home's ceiling, which must have proper insulation so that it can contain home energy. You must also make sure to check your fireplace. It is very difficult to regulate and control the temperature of a house that has a fireplace because of its design. A fireplace moves smoke out of the house, a process that is called propulsion of heat. The problem, however, is that even when the fireplace is not in use, propulsion still takes place. The best way to deal with this is to make sure that you keep the flue closed when the fireplace is not in use.
