Diets just don't work. As a predatory mammal, the human body is extremely adaptable under even the most severe and challenging survival circumstances. Most "diets" require a reduction in either fat, carbohydrates, eliminating certain food groups, or only eating certain ones, taking pills or supplements, and the list goes on and on. "Dieting" entails a certain aspect of restriction - in some way or another.

Let's look at the traditional low fat diet, which is usually the first place that people start. Fat is an essential nutrient, meaning that you need to eat a certain portion of it every day. However, not all fat is created equal. An example is trans-fatty acids, one of the worst things that you can put into your body. Trans-fats are a byproduct of hydrogenated oils and pose a serious health risk. Eliminating this type of fat from your diet is always a good bet; however, many other dietary fats, such as Omega-3 fats are essential to good health. Eating a diet including healthy fats can actually help lower LDL or bad cholesterol and helps the absorption of certain vitamins and minerals. And while cutting bad fat out of your diet may be plausible, it doesn't necessarily mean that you will be cutting calories, or losing any weight along the way.

Be wary about any fad diets which advise you to cut out certain food groups from your diet, such as the Atkin's or South Beach diets. Although they are great in theory, reducing your carbohydrate intake drastically will prevent spikes in insulin which can lead to weight loss, in practice, it is a much more complicated issue. Your body and brain prefers to use glucose as a fuel source, which comes from complex and simple carbs. When you are on a low carbohydrate diet, you will severely reduce your concentration and mental capabilities and will make you feel lethargic. Eventually, you can get used to it but your body would be running in a severely catabolic state, using fat and muscle as means of energy, which is just not how your body is supposed to run.

The best way to really make a lasting effect on your weight loss is to implement a complete lifestyle change in regards to your activity levels as well as your nutritional habits. Make a point not to consider doing a "one month low carb diet" just to get your weight down because once you stop, you will put that weight back on. It's best to change your habits slowly for a more permanent weight loss solution.
