Going out to dine in a restaurant has become more popular over the last couple of years. People are busier than ever. People tend to not cook too many meals at home any longer. There are rules of restaurant etiquette that should be followed to ensure that every diner is going to enjoy their meal.

When dining in a restaurant, it is always good to make a reservation or another way to look at it is to make an appointment for dinner. If you are not going to go to the restaurant due to problems last minute. Give the restaurant a call and cancel the reservation. By cancelling, the hostess can seat someone else at the table instead of waiting to see if you show up. Also if you are running more than fifteen minutes late, give the restaurant a call to let the hostess know what is going on.

A survey conducted in 2004 revealed that over twenty four restaurants in New York City require a gentleman to wear a jacket and tie. One might ask what is appropriate to wear when dining out. If unsure, call the restaurant and ask if there is a dress code. If there is one, ask what type of attire is required.

An uncomfortable situation for any diner is when the food brought is not cooked the way you ordered or not correct. The diner needs to decide will they just ride it out with what was given to them or send the dish back.

If sending the dish back to the kitchen, there is no need to be rude. Plainly and politely explain to the wait staff what the problem is and they will surely take it back to be corrected in the kitchen. If for some reason the wait staff does not want to accommodate you, ask to speak with the manager or owner of the restaurant. Remember the golden rule; you attract more flies with honey than vinegar. So be nice and not rude.

In a restaurant, cell phones should be turned off or on vibrate mode. A person needs to remember not to talk on the phone at the dinner table. If you get a friendly reminder from restaurant staff, do not catch an attitude, gladly take it outside or turn it off. Your family, other patrons and the restaurant will be glad that you did not take the call.

Dining in a restaurant can be a fun and adventurous experience. It is always a nice change for someone else to do the cooking and clean up after the meal. To enjoy your dining experience as well as let the other patrons enjoy theirs, there are a few rules of etiquette to follow. It is important to keep your reservation, be on time and if your not advise the restaurant.

Act responsibly. Remember dress appropriately. If the restaurant is fancy, it would not be alright to show up in shorts and a t shirt. If food is not cooked properly or how you ordered it, do not be intimidated. Communicate with your wait staff. It will make the whole dining experience more pleasurable for all parties. One important rule, turn the cell phone off or put on vibrate. Do not take calls when dining out. It is rude to the rest of the world but think how your family will feel when a phone call is more important than them.
