Cold, dark winters. Driving rainstorms. Busy schedules. There are lots of reasons why treadmills are a popular way to stay fit. So it's not surprising that millions of people find that having their own treadmill at home is often more convenient than walking or jogging outdoors, or belonging to a gym.

Treadmills are wonderfully versatile. They can also be used by people of all ages and fitness levels. You can walk at any time of the day or night, for a leisurely stroll or a 6-minute mile. And in the time it would take you to drive to and from a gym, you can finish your entire workout.

The Benefits of Treadmills

Studies have shown that people burn more calories when walking or jogging than they do when using a stair climber, rowing machine or stationary bike. That's because walking is so second nature to us, we're able to do it at a greater level of intensity before our body tells itself to back off. In fact, test subjects burn up to 40% more calories on a treadmill than they do while using 'less natural' machines. No other fitness machine works the cardiovascular and circulatory system as well as a treadmill, making it a very effective way to lose body fat.

Now that you know how effective these machines are and are ready to go out and buy one, slow down and do some research. Consider how much you weigh, how often you will be using the machine and how hard you run. For instance, if you're a 250-pound athlete who works out 7 days a week, you'll want to look at sturdier machines than if you are a 130-pound woman who works out 3 times a week.
