The HCG Protocol is a fat release system that is designed to utilize the body's own natural hormonal system. This diet regulates the stored areas of fat in the body and stimulates them to release long-term brown fat from areas of the body that are normally problematic areas. Such stored fat areas usually only release this fat when severe starvation is occurring or while a woman is pregnant.

During pregnancy, a woman secretes the hormone HCG as a preventative of starvation for the fetus. It does this by freeing up the brown fat that is stored in the mother's body and providing it as a source of food for the fetus. The inventor of the HCG diet discovered that combining HCG with a diet that is low in calories, brown fat stores could be liberated and the hypothalamus could be reset to discontinue storing calories that cause the brown fat to be stored.

When individuals use the HCG Diet Protocol and are not pregnant, their bodies react by releasing the brown fat that is stored in the body. This removes toxins and fat cells through the normal elimination system of the body. Depending upon the amount of weight the individual desires to lose, there are two different regimes that are available, the 26-day diet or the 40-day diet. Both diets require three phases for proper success.

The first two days is phase one where the individual is advised to eat a high fat and calorie diet and to eat several times a day as well as take the HCG drops. This builds up the normal fat areas that are needed around organs, as many individuals deplete their normal fats due to other dieting methods. Most individuals on the HCG diet do gain some weight during the first two days, but this is considered normal and is a sign that the HCG is beginning to work in the body's system.

The second phase is done for the remainder of the days and consists of eating a limited diet of 500 calories each day as well as taking the HCG each day. The diet allows for fruits and vegetables as well as small amounts of grains and limited protein intake. Most individuals lose a pound a day during this phase.

Phase 3 consist of maintenance that last for three weeks following the diet. The first three days of phase three calls for the continued 500 calorie diet while the HCG is still in the body. After this the individual can begin to eat whatever they want, but must avoid all sugars and starches. If a normal diet is consumed before the proper time, significant weight gain could occur.

The HCG Diet Protocol can result in two pounds of fat loss each day. As the metabolism is reset in the hypothalamus, this can result in long-term weight loss. As the brown fat stores are eliminated, the body begins to reshape and mold itself. This diet can be useful for individuals who have areas of fat that are difficult to eliminate and can be beneficial to individuals who are too overweight to exercise.
