Like any other numbskull of a man who has a zero perception of what jewelry is, I never thought that I would be able to find a unique piece of jewelry that would be fitting for the girl I was then courting. It took me around a week of searching and I had to be discreet about it. I asked my auntie to help me with the search. Before anything else, she asked me some questions. How long was I seeing or courting her and I replied a couple of months. “Was she allergic to any metals?” A long paused. Ok, I had to find out if she was allergic to any type of form of jewelry. Thinking of a plan, I asked her out for a movie, an afternoon matinee and she agreed. Picking her up from her place around 1.30 pm, we drove to a nearby Cineplex and as she was buying the popcorn, I tried to be discreet in viewing what she was wearing. She had a simple set of pearl earrings but nothing gold. So I commented, “Nice earrings.” She smiled and said, “Thanks they were an heirloom piece handed to me by my grandaunt.”

“Wow that must be something special”

“It is and it had a set of infinity jewelry with it but somehow it got lost”

“How did it get lost?” I asked.

“My mom used to tell me that my grandaunt was a very popular and wealthy businesswoman during her day—and this was at a time when women were not encouraged to have other careers save for being a wife and mother. But my grandaunt was a jeweler and her favorite type of jewelry was pearl earrings and infinity jewelry. She had at least a dozen sets of infinity jewelries that were worth a small fortune. She had some infinity jewelry made out of pure gold with diamond settings. Other infinity jewelry was full bracelets and chains. Back then, of course it wasn’t called infinity jewelry but since she loved the number 8, she made pieces that were shaped to that number.”

“So what happened and how did she lose it?”

“ Well, it seems that she had a lot of suitors and this one time, she had created a scene by saying to this one suitor ‘ you’re not even fit to shine my shoes’ and somehow this spurned gentleman, obviously embarrassed, took it upon himself to extract a revenge, one that would be shocking even to this day. Late one night, someone had broken into her house, climbed up into her room and had stabbed and sliced my grandaunt, not to kill her right away, but to let her die of blood loss. As her butler and maid came into the room and saw her lying in a pool of blood yet still alive, she gave instructions to them to call my grandmother, her sister. My grandmother went to her bedside and saw that her sister was about to pass on. My grandaunt then gave her instructions on how to open the safe, seeing that some of her jewelry in her desk had already been taken. She then bequeath all that was in her safe to my grandmother on the condition that the jewelry be passed on to her nieces and so on. Then she passed away.”

“Whatever happened to the assassin or the mastermind?” I asked

“No one was ever caught or charged but there were some suspects”

It was a tragic story indeed but I now know what to give her. Infinity jewelry is special to her and I intend to give it to her. Well, hoping underneath that somehow my infinity jewelry can replace the tragic memories of her aunt.
