Superb as it may sound, archery as a sports event was never heard about in the first Olympics in Greece. However since the event has been taking place for the previous 1000 years, so it is actually possible that it might have been part of the Olympic Games sometime in the past. For the 1st time archery for men was incorporated in the Olympic Games in 1900 while for women it started in 1904.

There were plenty of dissimilarities in the guidelines which governed the Olympic Games during those early years and after 1920, archery was no longer treated as a sport event. After many years, the world participator countries agreed to the Olympics rules but archery could only be seen as a sport during the 1972 Munich Olympic Games. In 1988, team competitions were held as well as the individual events.

From 1992, the schedule of the event is head-to-head competition among the top 64 sportsmen. There are 4 archery events : Individual rivals ( ladies and men ) shoot 72 arrows at a 'bulls-eye ' target from a distance of 70 meters ( 229 feet, 8 inches ). Single shot must follow the other in a matter of forty seconds and the ideal score is 720 with a 'sudden death ' overtime shot which occurs when there's a tie.

Each team has 3 archers and there are 16 teams in the team events where each archer throws 72 arrows which are shot from a distance of 70 meters. In a tie score, each team member will shoot one arrow and the arrow nearest to the center of the target decides the winner. The scoring in this game is according to where the arrow hits the target, which is composed of 10 rings so if the arrow hits the outermost ring, the archer gets one point, 2 points for the following ring and finally ten if the centre of the target is hit.

The bow utilized in Olympic archery event is recurve bow and any arrow shot from this sort of bow gathers a speed of 150 miles per hour. These scientifically advanced bows are made from graphite, wood and fiberglass which stabilise the motion of the arrow that has to travel in an ideal straight line helping the archer to target perfect. The overall cost of the equipment goes over 00 with strings made of hydrocarbon or from Kelvar and the arrows from aluminium or carbon graphite.

Archers who take part in Olympic Games level archery events often would be trained for 10 years. The type of the participant should be as perfect as practical. Then one has to have a good coach and the proper gear. Luckily , archery is far less pricey to pursue than plenty of other sports. To develop experience, you must read, learn and discuss things with other archers and then compete in local and nationwide events but most critically continue to practice rigorously.

sportsmen with disabilities can also take part in archery as a sport. For instance Neroli Fairhall was the 1st woman paraplegic who not only competed in the Olympics but this New Zealander also won a gold gong in the Commonwealth Games. This game is such that you can enjoy it with all the members of your family and if you so need, can go on playing it for the rest of your life.
