Babylon is a historical city. You can still see the remains of this ancient city in Iraq. Hotels in Babylon are quite hard to find but there are numerous hotels in Iraq that are situated close to the wonderful city of Babylon.

Babylon Facts

Babylon was once a state and city of ancient Mesopotamia. The remains of Babylon are still found within Al Hillah at the Babil Province of Iraq. It lies about 85 kilometers or 55 miles on the southern portion of the city of Baghdad. All the remnants of this ancient city and state are a mound of numerous broken brick buildings as well as debris from the Mesopotamian plain between the rivers of Euphrates and Tigris in Iraq. Although the remains of this framed city had been recently reconstructed, some historical resources had stated that the city and state of Babylon was once a small town that had sprung into civilization by the start of the 3rd millennium or the time of the dynasties. What used to be once a small town had attained political repute, prominence and flourished with the rise of the 1st Babylonian Dynasty.

The 1st Babylonian city was the named “Babylonia” which means “Holy City”. This was founded in the year 2300 BCE. The Neo Babylonian Empire seat was established in 612 BCE. The world famous “Hanging Gardens of Babylon” was even once part of the 7 Wonders of the World.

The term Babylon came from the Greek variant of the Akkadian Babilu which means “Gateway of the Gods”.

Babylon History

The earliest mention of “Babylon” is in the tablet during the reign of “Sargon of Akkad”. This was during the 24th century BCE. The Weidner Chronicle states that Sargon built the site in front of Akkad. There was also another chronicle that states that Sargon had dug up the dirt on Babylon and made a counterpart of the area just next to Agade.

Some researchers have stated more recently that sources that refer to the second Sargon of the Neo Assyrian Empire are more accurate as compared to the 1st Sargon of Akkad. There are also some scholars including IJ Gelb that have suggested that the name Babil is but an echo of the early city name.
Over the years, the population and power of Babylon had waned. From the 2oth century BCE, nomadic tribes from the western part of the world were referred to as Semitic speakers called Amorites had occupied Babylon. These tribes did not practice agriculture like the Akkadians since they prefer to tend sheep.
