HIgh school can be a weird time for anyone. As a kid growing up in the suburbs I had a pretty typical high school experience. I remember for me personally it seem that sophomore year was really the year that I broke out of my shell and became a real person persay. Up until sophomore year I was still a child I guess you could say. Although my friends and I might be talking about girls in middle school, it wasn't until sophomore year where I really grew up and started making it a point to be a bit cooler for these newly discovered girls. The transistion from 9th to 10th grade seemed like a lifetime.

I think it all started the summer leading into 10th grade. My parents were away and my brother decided to throw a big party. He was older then me by a few years so for me to be allowed to hang at his party was a big thing at the time. Well this party was were I had my first beer, really talked to my first girl and felt like a grown up. This just led into what would be my sophomore year. Instead of going right home after school to watch TV and maybe play some basketball I was hanging out with a new group of people. I finally had girls as friends and needless to say got my first girlfriend. Socially I was having the time of my life. I was playing in bands, had my weekends filled up with parties and friends. Although this was all great it did affect me academically. Not that I started doing poorly but I just wasn't going the extra mile any longer. I would much rather be hanging with my friends then studying for a test or putting in the extra time writing a paper that was due. I think this is the time in a lot of high school students lives where things can start falling away academically. You're starting to grow up, your parents aren't quite as scary as they used to be. Also at this point the idea of going to college seems far off and not something you need to worry about just yet. Its funny how certain years can shape your life so dramatically. At the time they may seem to be just stepping stones but when you look back at life you can see just how much of an impact that year or those certain events played in your life.

Seeing how my sophomore year changed me I always try to let younger adults know my experiences. Not that things went badly but you live and you learn. Academics need to be an important part of every year of high school if you are seriously contemplating a college career and are looking for any sort of scholarship or grant. You want to be able to put your best foot forward in these situations. Every year counts. High school is about learning, growing up and having fun. If you can do your best to get a good balance of all three then you are already ahead of the game.
