For over two centuries in this country there has been an increasingly serious need for real cures and effective treatment of facial acne. Until the beauty-worship developments in the last two decade adolescents had only old, home remedies to help them. These were highly suspect in terms of real and adequate treatment and those that did reflect some improvement were actually found to be simply applying an antibiotic to the surface of the skin.

Beginning in 1990 two specters would change this landscape forever. Marketing executives and sales consultants recognized that teenagers had both money and the willingness to spend it. They were highly regarded as sales targets for all things beauty related - including skin care. The other issue that drove a widespread revolution in this area was the total preoccupation of American youth with beauty. Both women and men began to be regarded - in terms of their worth as human beings - by how they looked rather than what they did, said or accomplished. If one could alter one's appearance markedly then one could in all probability alter how history would regard them.

Enter the marketing tactics of the prescription drug industry - appealing directly to patients and imploring them to demand product 'X' from their doctor. This marketing methodology succeeded beyond their wildest dreams, leading to the introduction of products like Proactive. While some of these products - primarily those that sanitize the skin - have been shown to be effective most have not. Rather they often deliver harsh and harmful chemicals to the skin in an endless attempt to 'kill' the condition. There have been thousands of documented cases of serious skin damage and even sever scaring caused by such products. This widespread and FDA-welcomed trend that feeds the take-a-pill solution to all things physical in our newfound world of instant gratification has not solved a thing.

The truth is that there are many non-chemical solutions based on real, modern research that can cure acne. Acne can be adequately cured with detailed analysis of what causes the condition in each patient, along with appropriate alterations in both diet and lifestyle.
