Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade is usually the first thing that comes to mind when the layman hears of communion cups.

Pop culture has greatly influenced us by signifying some of the most revered religious artifacts in a very unorthodox manner. However, the good thing with this is that they have also brought the spotlight on these items and helped people get acquainted with them.

In Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, the main character was hunting for the Holy Grail or the ultimate communion cup that Jesus Christ had used in ancient times.

In some literary works, the Holy Grail is not taken to just mean the cup that Christ had used, but also the dish as well as plate that Christ had used as well in the Last Supper that he had with his disciples.

As centuries passed, however, the meaning of the Holy Grail became synonymous with what we now call as our communion cup.

Nevertheless, even if people actually know about it, the use of communion cups all over the world has expanded and is very varied. The cups that are used are usually made from different kinds of materials depending on the people who make it as well as the country they are from.

For instance, Christian peasants in Mexico have a communion cup made from baked clay while the Christian Palestinians have a cup from olive wood.

Nowadays, we have come a long way from glass communion cups that the church used. Most churches now prefer to use plastic ones.

Some small churches still go for glass cups, but it can take up time since they require washing and cleaning up. Thus, plastic communion cups are deemed more favorable by most big churches.

As mentioned, the Holy Grail or Chalice is celebrated as one of the most sacred vessels in the Church and it is often blessed prior to using it.

History is an integral part of communion cups, whether it be the silver cups that the Egyptians and Sumerians used or the plastic cups that most churches use now. They are an important piece of element for the people that use them.

It supposedly contained the sponge that was used by Christ at Calvary. This was apart from the tradition and belief surrounding the cup from the last supper.

Out of this faith came the belief in the legends of the cup, from Indiana Jones to Merlin and Dan Brown, the story of the ultimate Communion Cup or the Holy Grail is still alive and celebrated.

It is thought to contain the sponge that Christ had used during Calvary. This is different from the tradition and actual belief surrounding the cup from the last supper.
