As cliché as it may sound, but knowledge will always be power. If you re suffering from acne or if you want to avoid it, it s important that you re loaded with the right kind of information. It will basically determine the next steps that you have to take to get rid or prevent this common skin issue.

What is acne?

Acne is actually a problem to your oil glands. As their name suggests, oil glands are the areas where sebum (body oil) is being produced. You need this oil to keep your skin moisturized and smooth at all times. However, there are times when your body tends to produce too much oil. If it mixes with your dead skin cells and bacteria, the pores will eventually clog up, and pimples or acne can form.

Who develops acne?

Acne is very common, and it affects millions of people all over the world. In fact, if you have not suffered from acne yet, then you re one of the lucky few. Usually, men and women would experience acne at least once in their lives. However, since the overproduction of oil is attributed to hormonal changes, they are very common among teens, whose hormones are raging while growing up. They are also seen in men and women who are under stress. Stress has the ability to increase the production of sebum in the body.

What are the different kinds of acne?

There are a lot of types of acne, but you can classify them into two. You have mild and cystic. Mild ones are definitely much easier to treat than those that are considered cystic. This is because the latter is already considered as the more severe form of acne. Nevertheless, mild acne is the most common among the two.

Some types of mild acne include whiteheads, blackheads, and postules. Cystic acne can be acne rosacea, acne fulminans, and pyoderma faciale. These are characterized by the presence of large nodules or skin lesions. They are also very painful.

What are the other causes of acne?

Besides hormonal changes, you can also get acne if the skin issue runs in your family. If your parents suffered from this before, there s a good chance that you will too. There are also certain medications that can cause hormonal dysfunction, causing the overproduction of oil. A good example is the birth control pills. They can alter your hormonal levels.

A lot of people think that acne is caused by eating oily foods. They are not the main culprit; however, they can worsen the condition.

Can acne go back?

Acne is a recurring skin disorder, but it depends on how you take care of your skin. If you can get rid of dirt and bacteria from your skin, then there s a huge chance that it won t happen again.

How do one stop acne?

The first step is to see a dermatologist, so he or she can assess what kind of treatment would be ideal for your acne. You may also want to keep yourself healthy by eating the right kinds of food. This way, you ll have enough capacity to get rid of infection.
