If you're out there looking for the best way to get your web site online, you've probably run into some confusion over web hosting. To put it mildly, there are many choices, and for most people the options can be overwhelming. Let's take a look at shared web hosting, which for most people is the best alternative.

Almost everyone starts out with shared web hosting. This is the most economical way to host your site. In this arrangement, you are sharing space with hundreds of other sites on one particular server. All sites on that server share the disk storage space and bandwidth for that server.

Most people who are publishing personal or home business sites will do just fine with shared hosting. These sites typically have moderate traffic levels and don't use a lot of file transfer resources, as a heavy multimedia (video) site would. Thus, their demand on the server at any given time is likely to be low.

If any particular website on a shared hosting system suddenly gets a big rush of traffic, it can create some bottlenecks and potentially compromise the performance of other sites on that same server. This is unusual but can happen in certain circumstances.

If you have a lot of visitors downloading or viewing video or other files on your site, that can use more resources than the web host has allocated for any one individual site. Good hosting providers are always on the lookout for spikes in activity, and will step in and do whatever it takes to balance things out.

The cost of shared hosting should always be very reasonable. Typically, you can host your site (and usually several others) for around $8-$10 per month for basic service. Don't sign on to any long-term deals with a host you are not familiar with. Some will offer special incentives to sign up for a year or two in advance. Wait until you have used their services for a while, and make sure you're happy with them before you commit to more than 1-3 months at a time.

If you are also are interested in creating your own website from scratch, be careful with the hosting deals where you are offered site creation tools. Some of these are very easy to use and quite appealing, but a few are proprietary tools and should you choose to leave someday, moving your site to another host could be difficult. There are lots of excellent site creation tools out there that aren't tied into hosting plans - if you want to use this type of tool, this is your best bet.

For most people hosting personal or small business sites, shared web hosting is the most practical solution. You get everything you need in abundance, and you always have the option to upgrade your plan to a dedicated server should your site expand and require a higher level of service.
