Even though cell phones have become an essential part of our everyday lives its still an expensive item. The fact that phones are becoming better and better with more functions than ever makes it an even bigger burden on the monthly budget. There is so much you can do with your phone and anything from listen to music to watching your favorite TV show is all in the palm of your hands. It does come at a cost though and unless you control your spending it can be a very expensive device.

Saving on cell phone costs is all about being smart. The majority of people who have sky high phone bills are those who aren't in control of their spending. I believe that the best way to save with your cell phone is to switch to a prepaid plan instead of being on a long term contract. Here's how you can save:

1. The Phone Itself

While you get a phone "for free" on long term contracts, the truth is that you do pay for it. Instead of paying the full amount up front its factored into your monthly payments and when you add it all up you will see that you actually pay a lot more for the phone than what it would cost you out of pocket. You also tend to get roped into buying the latest and most expensive phones with your contract. On a prepaid plan you can simply buy your own phone and use that which will allow you to get something at a much more reasonable price.

2. Call Costs

Pay as you go call costs are more expensive. There is no doubt about that. The saving however is not in the per minute charge but in the amount of time you spend on your phone. Contract users tend to chat away as if there is no end and when they do go over their allotted limit, they get charges a small fortune. Prepay helps you budget and it helps you to use only what you have already paid for. There are no nasty surprises when you get your bill at the end of the month.

3. Extras

All the carriers use extras to draw in customers. These days there are so many extras you can add to your cell phone that it can be irresistible. Facebook, Twitter, Tivo and even surfing the internet. In reality these things cost you and somewhere down the line you will pay for it. The ironic thing is that most contract users have these things, they pay for it but hardly use it. On a prepay phone you will probably only use those things you really need and you won't have to pay for extras you don;t need or won't use.
