There isn't a single person on earth who has not faced anxiety and stress. The day to day living that most people undertake everyday is ripe with opportunities to be afraid or anxious. Children, jobs, marriages, and many other things are constantly challenging us and causing stress. Anxiety occurs when your heart beats faster, you break out in a cold sweat and you feel as though you can't catch your breath. The symptoms are frightening, but they can be controlled with treatment.

Everyone has things in their life that cause anxiety and stress. There is really no way to get away from it completely. The stress response that our body goes through is there for a reason. In the past it was this response that kept us safe from danger. The body still responds in the same way today, but there are fewer reasons for it. When anxiety attacks occur for very little reason, it is likely that you are suffering from an anxiety disorder.

Every patient is different in their response to anxiety. The symptoms of the disorder range from very physical to emotional symptoms. The physical symptoms are rapid heartbeat, sweating, trembling, nausea, dizziness and many others. Other anxiety patients may only experience the emotional symptoms such as irritability and moodiness.

Doctors are able to determine when symptoms of anxiety are indeed anxiety and not a physical illness. When a patient is experiencing frequent anxiety attacks that interfere with their daily life, it is essential that they visit the doctor for a diagnosis. Only when a diagnosis is made can treatment for the illness get started. There are treatments available that will help and the sooner you get started the better off you will be.

Treatment techniques that focus on the behaviour of the patient can be a great help in eliminating negative thinking. Cognitive behaviour therapy is a common approach to anxiety disorders. This process teaches patients how to identify negative thoughts and replace them with realistic positive thinking. Changing the way that you think about the things that cause you anxiety can be a tremendous benefit for someone having anxiety attacks. It can be a difficult and long process, but it is well worth the hard work. Depression patients also use this type of treatment to combat the irrational thinking with that disorder.

Some doctors use exposure therapy to help patients with anxiety. The theory is that patients who are regularly exposed to their fear, will soon develop an immunity to it. In other words, the patient will no longer feel anxiety over the triggers that once caused an anxiety attack in the past. This helps patients learn how to face their fears.
